Why is cockroach control important?
A cockroach infestation is something that can happen to any property. If properly resolved as early as possible, the damage can be mitigated and the functionality of the property quickly restored. There are an assortment of cockroach nest removal solutions on the market with our team at Willis Pest Control having access to the latest in cockroach extermination equipment and techniques.
Regular roaches can comfortably survive for several months without food and up to two weeks without water, attributes that can make them challenging to efficiently dispose of without professional expertise.
Getting a good idea of the cockroach removal solutions available to you can ensure that you make the right decision in resolving the issue as quickly as possible. Time is of the essence when it comes to cockroach extermination as they are able to multiply rapidly, building up a nest from within which they are then difficult to remove.
If you suspect that you may have a cockroach infestation, the first step you should take is to eliminate their access to food and water.
The most common cockroaches in the UK?
There are four roach breeds predominantly found in the UK with the most common being the German Cockroach followed by the Oriental.
- German Roach – Average in size, reaching about 1,5 cm in length. You can differentiate them from other roaches quite easily. They have two dark stripes on their light-brown thorax. You’ll most likely spot them in your kitchen or bathroom, as they like being near food and water.
- Oriental Roach – This type of roach is a whole lot larger than the German roach and has the ability to grow up to 3cm in length. It is often found to be a very dark brown or sometimes even black in colour. The oriental roach thrives when occupying cool, damp and dark places. These conditions are optimal for breeding. You will often find the Oriental cockroach in places such as garages, sheds and sometimes drains.
- American Roach – A species which is growing increasingly popular in Britain is the American cockroach. It is in fact one of the larger species and has the potentially to grow up to 4cm. When looking at the American cockroach, it’s visible red-brown colour. It prefers humid conditions and it can be often found in sewers and near drains, as well as on the grounds of animal-rearing facilities.
- Brown Roach – commonly found crawling across the ground but able to fly in some more tropical climates, the Brown Branded gravitates toward warmer environments and commonly takes shelter within heated properties creating nests close to heat-emitting appliances.
How to tell if you have a cockroach infestation?
Below are some of the leading signs that may help you identify a cockroach infestation within your property.
It’s also a good idea to look out for:
- Unusual Distinct Smells
During an cockroach infestation, roaches will always leave a odour that taints any items they touch / contact. This smell will linger & will often be unpleasant.
- Droppings
Due to a lack of water available to the cockroach, it is often the case they will produce brown / black cylindrical droppings which are approximately 2mm long.
- Smear Marks
Alternatively, if water is abundant amongst the roaches, it is often the case that they will produce brown and irregular shaped smear marks. You will be able to check for these marks on horizontal surfaces where roaches regularly move.
- Shedded Skins
During the maturity of a cockroach, it is common that they will shed skins around 5-8 times. It is also common that these skins are found where / near roaches are sheltering.
Cockroach Removal Steps
Boasting attributes that make them challenging to dispose of, it usually takes far more than just insecticide to fully dispose of a cockroach infestation. Generally, you will require a comprehensive plan and aftercare strategy to successfully dispose of – and further repel – any pests that may take an interest in your property.
If you discover a cockroach infestation in one of your rooms, there’s a good chance that they may have also set up elsewhere within your property and should be carefully monitored. In the aforementioned section we discuss some of the most common roach breeds with each having its own preference for nesting locations. Overall, you may wish to carry out checks within bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, basements & drain pipes / networks.

Key to carrying out a cockroach removal is a property inspection; through this we identify nesting locations and assess the severity of the infestation to formulate a plan for safely disposing of them. Insecticides are available on the market and can be applied DYI, however, these are only effective when dealing with small numbers of roaches and may not fully resolve the issue in the long run.
Chances are that if they’ve had a chance to nest, the roaches in your property are now breeding in large numbers. It’s highly recommended that you quickly get in touch with a member of the Willis Pest Control team with the outlook to carry out a cockroach extermination session.
